After drawn-out speculation, Anthony Albanese called the 2025 federal election for Saturday, 3rd of May. Over 37 days of official campaigning, policies were announced (and scrapped), hard hats worn, doors knocked, corflutes erected, and debates broadcast.
If you're lucky, your democratic right and obligation to vote was celebrated with a sizzling democracy sausage or bake sale. Australian style.
By 9:50pm on Saturday, it was a wrap! The ABC's ever-reliable election analyst, Antony Green, announced that Labor had won a majority of seats (and it 'may even be a substantial majority') in his final live election broadcast.
Further counting proved Antony's forecast, with Anthony Albanese delivering what is being described as a 'win for the ages'. Not only has Labor secured a second term of government with a significantly improved majority, but the Coalition has suffered a historic collapse in support with just 40 lower house seats predicted and Opposition Leader Peter Dutton losing his own seat alongside several other Coalition front-benchers.
You're only human if you're feeling politics fatigue. The Prime Minister and (now former) Opposition Leader have been unofficially campaigning since January, criss-crossing the nation to appeal for your 'Vote 1'. But our role as citizens does not begin and end at the ballot box.
Whether you're celebrating or commiserating the election outcome, politically engaged or disengaged (or somewhere in between), join this special event to share your experiences and perspectives on the 2025 federal election.
This Folio Conversation with Erin Cooper-Douglas — Deputy Editor (Politics + Society) at The Conversation — will help us unpack what the election campaign and outcome reveal about Australia and Australians. It's a unique opportunity for citizens to lead their own post-election debrief, supported by an award-winning political journalist!
This event is part of a collection of events and curated content on the theme 'Election 2025'. This theme explores the major issues and forces shaping Australian politics in this election year.
